This recording began to materialize through conversations with Ingrid Sertso and myself about shakuhachi and voice with lyrics. Karl and I had done a number of recordings and performances in the past. With Karl's new studio setup and Ted Orr at the engineering an opportunity arose. John Lindberg was in the neighborhood, the bassist with The String Trio of New York. We gathered at the studio. Karl played vibes and also piano at which time I played shakuhachi and other wind instruments and percussion.
Before the session began Ingrid and I sat together with a collection of my poems, essays and proverbs. She chose one small phrase and used it in her improvisation as well as some of her own lyrics for other sections. The saying that she liked from my book goes like this:
"If you want me to say
that the moon is gray
I'll say that it is
even though
it's not."

I particularly liked the way she changed the lyrics in one section and said:
"even though it's not
It is".
One further note, out of all the shakuhachi recordings I've done, Ted Orr was the closest to making me as happy as I could possibly be with the sound.
