about

The  Novel

On first serious listening to this recording, I was struck by the fascinating complexity of the music as if it was developing a novel; meaning a book of great length which took its time to span through the entire life or history of a novel situation. It then dawned on me that this recording was like a book and each piece could be perceived individually like one might look at an abstract painting.
For me, I saw a cat on an adventure. Like Curious George. Guillermo’s clarinet is the cat and with him is his friend and together they are traveling into drama, from murder to jungles to intricate character development.
I did not choose to title the chapters. Like in my other recordings, such as “The Beggar” or “Ittekimasu,” the theme was suggested in the title of the album. But the activity and description of the movements or the chapters were not described so as to leave space for your imagination.
In choosing this band, my association with Guillermo was the catalyst. We played in a trio with Kono, who recently re-emerged into my world (remember “Iro Iro” with Kono, Kevin Norton and Tomas Ulrich).
Ironically, even with some resistance to drums from both Guillermo and Kono, I thought a great drummer with individuality and ears would be Bruce Ditmas. Everyone was pleased. Four strongly unique voices covered a large spectrum of musical interest.

I hope you enjoy this recording for a long time.—Steve Cohn
