about

“We”

This record was recorded in the early 90's, right after the first Bush president sent troops to Iraq. I was pissed. What senseless bullshit is war!
David Baker, a lover of the shakuhachi and brilliant engineer now passed away, engineered this session. Tom Tedesco produced and invited me and William Parker. Between the sound engineering and the playing, I always felt this tape should see the light of publishing. For me, there was a conscious theme in my mind that we were playing about the insanity of war. Listen to Tedesco as he yells out “them and us are nothing more then we!” In another section, I let the playing go so out of control that it made perfect sense.
There are melodic themes in a couple of sections which reflect doom and the revelry bugle reminding us of war in our lives as well as its outcome. We as musicians are here not to judge but to express our feelings about what’s around us and to paint a picture.
On a lighter note, it is an honor to hold fast to recorded works which have difficulty in being made available knowing that their value, once recognized, will be rewarding.—Steve Cohn
